An ancient extinct volcano on the Kenya border with one of the world's largest calderas. It offers quiet summit treks, caves, coffee farms and the three-tiered Sipi Falls.
Mount Elgon straddles the Uganda–Kenya border in eastern Uganda. It is one of the oldest volcanoes in East Africa, and the massive base and 40 km-wide caldera suggest it was once taller than Kilimanjaro. The Ugandan national park covers about 1,121 km². Its highest point, Wagagai (4,321 m), sits on the caldera rim. Elgon is far less visited than the Rwenzori or Kilimanjaro, so trekkers often have the mountain almost to themselves.
| Location | Eastern Uganda, on the Kenya border, near Mbale and Kapchorwa |
| Size | About 1,121 km² on the Ugandan side |
| Established | 1992 |
| Highest point | Wagagai, 4,321 m |
| Caldera | About 40 km across, one of the largest volcanic calderas in the world |
| Trailheads | Budadiri (Sasa), Kapkwai (Sipi), Kapkwata (Piswa) |
Most trekkers go up by Sasa and down by Sipi, taking in the caldera, the Suam hot springs and the Jackson's Summit area. See our 5-day Mount Elgon hiking experience.
On Elgon's lower slopes, the Sipi River drops over three waterfalls. The highest falls about 100 m in front of a wide cave overhang. A guided 3–4 hour walk visits all three through Bugisu farmland, with views over the Karamoja plains. Sipi is also Uganda's best-known place for arabica coffee: local farmers show you picking, roasting and brewing. See coffee safari in Uganda. There is abseiling beside the main fall and rock climbing at Endiro.
Mbale, the main town, is about 5–6 hours from Entebbe by road via Jinja, and Sipi is another hour. A trip to Elgon combines naturally with Jinja and, for the adventurous, with Pian Upe and Kidepo in the north-east.
Elgon suits hikers who want a genuine multi-day mountain trek without crowds, technical climbing or extreme altitude. It is also good preparation for Kilimanjaro or the Rwenzori. Families and less active travellers can still enjoy the mountain through the Sipi Falls walks, coffee tours and short forest trails from Kapkwai. It is a very different Uganda from the savannah and gorilla parks.
A longer 6–7 day traverse goes up via Sasa and down via the Sipi trail, visiting the hot springs in the caldera and Jackson's Summit.
Elgon's forests hold blue monkeys, black-and-white colobus, forest elephants (on the Kenyan side especially), buffalo, bushbuck and duikers, although animals are shy. Around 300 bird species have been recorded, including the Jackson's francolin, Tacazze sunbird, black-collared apalis and the endangered Lammergeier (bearded vulture), sometimes seen soaring over the caldera. Above the tree line, the moorlands have giant lobelias and groundsels similar to the Rwenzori's.
Sipi Falls lies about an hour above Mbale, on the edge of the mountain. The three falls drop from the edge of the Elgon plateau. The highest, at about 100 m, falls in front of a cave you can walk behind. A guided walk to all three takes 3–4 hours, through farmland with views over the Karamoja plains. Sipi is also a base for coffee tours with local Bugisu farmers, abseiling beside the main falls, rock climbing and mountain biking. Most visitors spend 1–2 nights. See coffee safari in Uganda.
June to August and December to March are the driest periods and the best for summit treks. The wet season makes trails slippery and clouds hide the views, but Sipi Falls is at its most powerful.
Elgon pairs naturally with Jinja for rafting and the Nile, and with Pian Upe and Kidepo for a north-eastern circuit. See our 5-day Mount Elgon hiking experience.
Elgon is known for its caves, formed in volcanic rock. Some, such as Kitum Cave on the Kenyan side, are famous for elephants that enter to lick salt from the walls. On the Ugandan side, caves near Kapkwai and along the trails, including Tutum Cave, were used as shelters by local Sabiny and Bagisu people and by early explorers. Some show ancient paintings. Local Bagisu culture is known for Imbalu, the male circumcision ceremony held in even-numbered years, a major cultural event in the Mbale region.

The slopes of Mount Elgon produce Bugisu arabica, one of Uganda's best-known coffees, grown by thousands of smallholder farmers at 1,500–2,300 metres. Around Sipi, farmers run tours where you pick ripe cherries, pulp and dry the beans, roast them over a fire and grind them by hand, then drink the result. It's a hands-on way to meet local families and understand one of Uganda's most important exports. Coffee tours combine well with the Sipi Falls walk in a single day.
UWA charges fees per day for trekking on Mount Elgon, plus separate fees for guides, porters and camping. Sipi Falls walks are paid to local guide associations. On our tours, fees for listed activities are included.
From Kampala, drive east via Jinja to Mbale (4–5 hours), then 1 hour to Sipi or 30 minutes to Budadiri. The route passes the source of the Nile at Jinja and the Mabira Forest. Mbale is also a good base for Pian Upe and the north-east.
4 days on the Sasa trail, or 5–7 days combining the Sasa and Sipi trails with the caldera and hot springs.
It is lower (4,321 m vs 5,895 m), so altitude is less of a problem, but the Sasa trail's first day is steep. Most fit hikers manage it without technical skills.
Yes. Sipi Falls makes a relaxed 2–3 day trip with waterfall walks and coffee tours.
Budadiri for the Sasa trail, Kapkwai near Sipi for the Sipi trail, and Kapkwata for the Piswa trail.
Yes: blue monkeys, colobus, duikers, buffalo and occasionally elephants, but they are shy and rarely seen.
June to August and December to March, the driest months, when trails are firmer and summit views clearer.
Three waterfalls on Elgon's slopes, the tallest about 100 m, plus coffee tours, abseiling and hiking.
Fit beginners can complete the Sasa or Sipi routes with guides and porters. It is less technical than the Rwenzori.
It is possible but long, about 5–6 hours each way. One or two nights at Sipi is much better.
Yes. Lodges and guesthouses on the cliff edge range from simple bandas to comfortable cottages, many with views of the main falls.
Yes. All treks are led by UWA ranger guides, and porters are available to carry bags and camping equipment.
