Planning guide

Every itinerary below is a private safari: your own 4x4 vehicle with a pop-up roof, your own driver-guide, and lodges chosen for your budget. Treat them as starting points. Dates, lodge standard, pace and add-ons such as a second gorilla trek, a boat cruise or a night by a lake can all be changed before we quote.

How pricing works

Tour prices depend on four things: permits (the gorilla permit alone is US$800 in Uganda and US$1,500 in Rwanda), the lodge standard, the number of travellers sharing the vehicle, and the season. We quote per person in US dollars, with everything listed as included or excluded. Our cost-per-day guide explains typical ranges, and how to book covers deposits and payment.

How a Fuga safari works

Every tour follows the same structure, whatever its length. Your driver-guide meets you at Entebbe or Kigali airport and stays with you for the whole trip. You travel in a private 4x4 safari vehicle, usually a Toyota Land Cruiser or an extended safari van, with a pop-up roof for game viewing, a window seat for everyone, a cool box with drinking water, and charging points. Nights are spent in lodges or camps chosen for their location, so you wake up close to the next morning's activity. Activities are either guided by your driver-guide (game drives and nature walks) or by park rangers (gorilla and chimp treks, boat cruises, rhino tracking). Your guide handles every briefing, permit and park entry.

Uganda or Rwanda?

Choose Uganda for variety and value: gorillas at US$800, chimpanzees, tree-climbing lions, the Nile at Murchison and rhinos on foot, with longer drives between parks. Choose Rwanda for short, polished trips: gorillas 2½ hours from Kigali airport, plus Nyungwe, Akagera and Lake Kivu. Or combine both on a one-way route.

When to travel

Our tours run all year. The drier months (June–September and December–February) are the most popular and need the earliest booking, while April, May and November bring lower prices, including the US$600 Uganda gorilla permit. See best time to visit Uganda and Rwanda.

Before you book

Read our travel guide for visas, health and money, check the packing list, and see how to book for deposits and payments. Common questions are answered in our safari FAQ.

How to read one of our itineraries

Each tour page shows a day-by-day plan with the main activity, the drive or flight time, the overnight location and the meal plan. "FB" means full board (breakfast, lunch and dinner), and "BB" means bed and breakfast. Drive times are realistic door-to-door estimates, including short stops. Where a day says "optional", the activity isn't in the base price, and we will quote it if you want it. Lodges are listed as examples at each level, and we confirm the exact lodge when checking availability for your dates.

Travelling with us: the practical side

  • Your guide: an experienced Ugandan or Rwandan driver-guide who speaks English, knows the parks and wildlife, and stays with you throughout.
  • Your vehicle: serviced before each trip, with a pop-up roof, a cool box, a first-aid kit and a spare tyre. Our office in Entebbe tracks every trip.
  • Meals: lodges cater for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and other diets with advance notice. Packed lunches are provided on trek days.
  • Connectivity: most lodges have Wi-Fi, and your guide can help you buy a local SIM card on day one. See SIM cards and internet.
  • Money: bring some US dollars in newer, undamaged notes for tips and extras. See how much cash to carry.

Responsible travel

Our tours are designed so that your money supports conservation and local people. Park fees fund rangers and research, and part goes to communities living beside the parks. Porters, community walks, cultural visits and local lodges keep income in the villages around the forests. We follow the wildlife authorities' rules on distances, group sizes and viewing times, and we brief every guest on gorilla and chimp etiquette before the trek.

  • Gorillas + Lake Bunyonyi: the classic short trip, 3–4 days.
  • Chimps + Queen Elizabeth + gorillas: the primate and wildlife circuit, 5–8 days.
  • Murchison + Ziwa rhinos: the Nile and the Big Five in 3–4 days.
  • Volcanoes + Akagera: Rwanda's gorillas and Big Five in 4 days.
  • Uganda + Rwanda: gorillas in one country, golden monkeys and Lake Kivu in the other, 8+ days.

Why travel with a local operator

Fuga Tours and Travel is based in Entebbe, a few minutes from the international airport. Our team plans, books and runs every safari itself, from the permit application to the driver-guide who meets you at arrivals. When plans change on the road, whether because of a washed-out murram road after heavy rain, a delayed domestic flight or a gorilla family that moved far overnight, decisions are made locally and quickly. Frequently asked questions

Are your tours private or group tours?

All our tours are private: your own vehicle and driver-guide, on your dates. Group sizes are set by you.

Can I change a tour itinerary?

Yes. Every listed tour can be shortened, lengthened or adjusted, with different lodges, extra activities or different parks.

How much does a safari cost per day?

Roughly US$150–250 per person per day for budget trips, US$250–450 for mid-range and US$500–1,000+ for luxury, plus gorilla or chimp permits.

What vehicle will I travel in?

A private 4x4 safari vehicle, usually a Land Cruiser or extended safari van, with a pop-up roof and window seats for everyone.

Can I start in Kigali and end in Entebbe?

Yes. One-way routes between Uganda and Rwanda are common and save time.

Do you offer tours outside Uganda and Rwanda?

We specialise in Uganda and Rwanda. For beach extensions, Zanzibar is a short flight away, and we can advise on connections.

How far in advance should I book a safari?

For gorilla trips in June–September or December–February, 4–6 months ahead (6–12 months for Rwanda). For other trips and seasons, 1–2 months is usually enough.

Are gorilla permits included in tour prices?

Yes, whenever gorilla trekking appears in the itinerary. The permit is booked in your name and included in the quoted price.
