Most Kenya safari tours start in Nairobi and are built around the Masai Mara. From there you can add Lake Nakuru for rhinos, Amboseli for elephants and Kilimanjaro, or Samburu in the dry north. Each tour can be changed, made longer or shorter, or priced at budget, mid-range or luxury level.
| Days | What fits |
|---|---|
| 3 days | The Masai Mara by road from Nairobi |
| 5–6 days | The Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Amboseli |
| 8–10 days | Add Samburu, or fly between parks for more time on game drives |
| 10+ days | Gorilla trekking in Uganda, then the Masai Mara |
On a road safari you travel with your own driver-guide in a 4x4 with a pop-up roof, and the drives between parks are part of the trip, with stops in the Rift Valley. A fly-in safari uses light aircraft from Nairobi's Wilson Airport and saves long days on the road. Many trips mix the two: drive to the Mara, then fly back to Nairobi.
Every itinerary links each night to the lodges we use in that park. Our Kenya safari lodges guide lists them by park, from simple tented camps to classic river camps.
Nairobi is about an hour's flight from Entebbe and Kigali, so Kenya is easy to add to a gorilla trek. See Uganda and Kenya safaris.
