Kenya Travel Guide for Safari Travellers

This Kenya travel guide covers what to sort out before a safari: entry permission, health, money, getting around and a few local rules worth knowing.

Kenya Travel Guide for Safari Travellers

Kenya is one of the easiest countries in Africa for a safari, with good flight connections, many lodges and experienced guides. A little preparation makes the trip smoother, especially if you are combining Kenya with Uganda or Rwanda.

Entry and visas

Most visitors need to apply online for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) before travelling to Kenya. Apply well before your trip and carry a copy. If you are visiting Uganda, Rwanda and Kenya on one trip, the East Africa Tourist Visa covers all three countries. Entry rules change from time to time, so check the current requirements for your passport before you book flights.

Health

  • Yellow fever. A vaccination certificate may be checked when you arrive, and it is required if you come from a country with yellow fever risk, such as Uganda. Uganda also requires it for entry.
  • Malaria. There is a malaria risk in most safari areas and on the coast, though it is low in Nairobi and the highlands. Ask your doctor about anti-malaria tablets, and use insect repellent in the evenings.
  • Travel insurance. Take insurance that covers medical evacuation.

Money

The currency is the Kenyan shilling. US dollars are widely accepted at lodges and for tips, and cards work in most lodges and hotels in Nairobi. Mobile money, known as M-Pesa, is used everywhere in Kenya. Carry some cash for tips and small purchases.

Getting there and around

  • International flights arrive at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi.
  • Light aircraft to the Masai Mara, Amboseli and Samburu leave from Wilson Airport in Nairobi, with strict luggage limits, usually soft bags only.
  • From Uganda or Rwanda, Nairobi is about an hour's flight from Entebbe or Kigali.
  • By road, safaris use 4x4 vehicles with pop-up roofs. Kenya drives on the left.

Local rules worth knowing

  • Plastic bags are banned in Kenya, so do not pack them, even for shoes or laundry.
  • Drones need a permit and are not allowed in national parks without one.
  • Photos of people. Always ask before photographing people, including in Maasai villages.

Safety

Safari areas are generally safe, and lodges and guides look after you closely. In Nairobi, take the usual city precautions: use a driver or registered taxi, do not walk alone at night, and keep valuables out of sight.
