3-Day Masai Mara Safari from Nairobi: overview

This 3-day Masai Mara safari from Nairobi gives you two nights in Kenya's best-known reserve, with a full day of game drives for lions, leopards and cheetahs.

It is the shortest way to see the Masai Mara properly, and it runs all year. From about July to October the Great Migration is usually in the reserve, and a full day on the plains gives you a chance of a Mara River crossing. The trip can also be flown, which turns the long drives into 45-minute flights.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1Nairobi to the Masai Mara

Pick-up from your hotel or the airport in Nairobi. The road climbs over the edge of the Great Rift Valley, with a stop at a viewpoint, then crosses the valley floor to Narok and on to the reserve, about 5–6 hours in all. After lunch at your lodge, take an afternoon game drive.

Overnight: a lodge or camp in the Masai Mara, at budget, mid-range or luxury level.

Day 2Full day in the Masai Mara

An optional dawn hot-air balloon flight over the plains, followed by a bush breakfast. Then a full day of game drives with a picnic lunch, looking for lions, cheetahs and leopards, and in migration season heading for the Mara River crossing points. In the late afternoon you can visit a Maasai village near the reserve.

Overnight: a lodge or camp in the Masai Mara, at budget, mid-range or luxury level.

Day 3Morning game drive and return to Nairobi

A last early game drive while the cats are active, breakfast at the lodge, then the drive back to Nairobi, arriving in the late afternoon in time for an evening flight.
