Overview
The 3-Day Uganda Shoebill and Murchison Falls Birding Safari takes through small towns Kampala Hoima Nakasongora to Murchison. The 3 days , 450+ bird species, and one prehistoric-looking bird everyone comes for. You leave Kampala, drive 6 hours north, and by afternoon you’re on the Nile searching for the Shoebill stork 5 feet tall, shoe-shaped bill, dinosaur stare. Day 2 you’re at the base of Murchison Falls watching birds work the spray, then afternoon savannah birding for secretary birds, Abyssinian ground hornbills, and rollers. Day 3 you bird your way back to Kampala.
Detailed Itinerary
Day 1: Kampala/Entebbe → Transfer to Murchison Falls National Park
Fuga tours driver picks you up from Entebbe Airport or Kampala hotel after breakfast. Kampala to Murchison is 6-7 hours drive north. We take the Masindi route tarmac all the way, then murram into the park. You pass sugarcane fields, small towns, then the landscape opens to savannah. Stop for lunch in Masindi town and bird the gardens for weavers, sunbirds, and grey-backed fiscal.
We enter Murchison through Kichumbanyobo Gate. The change is instant elephant tracks in the road, baboons on termite mounds, giraffes in the distance. Check into a lodge on the south bank of the Nile. Fuga books lodges right on the river so you can bird from your veranda.
Late afternoon we take a boat or vehicle to the Nile delta area. This is Shoebill country. The Shoebill stork looks prehistoric for a reason it hasn’t changed much in millions of years. It stands still for hours in papyrus swamps, waiting to ambush fish.
Your guide poles the boat slowly through papyrus channels, scanning. When we find one, the boat stops. No talking, no sudden moves. You watch it stare at you with yellow eyes, then snap its giant bill shut. 30 minutes with a Shoebill is a lifer for most birders.
Back to lodge for dinner as hippos grunt from the Nile. Early sleep. Tomorrow starts at sunrise.
Day 2: Murchison Falls Boat Cruise and Savannah Birding
Wake Up at 6am. Coffee, then we drive to the south bank pier. Board a boat for the 3-hour cruise to the base of Murchison Falls. The Nile is a bird highway. On the way you’ll see African fish eagle, Goliath heron, African openbill stork, malachite kingfisher, pied kingfisher, and squacco herons. Hippos surface, crocodiles bask, and elephants come to drink.
As we get close to the falls, the spray rises 40 meters into the air. We cut the engine at the base. The roar is loud and the mist hits your face. Rock pratincoles nest on the cliffs. African black eagles circle above. This is one of the few places you can bird while looking up at a 43-meter waterfall.
Boat back slowly, birding the banks. Out by 11am for lunch at lodge. Afternoon game drive on the north bank savannah. Murchison has over 76 mammal species, but we’re here for birds. Fuga guides scan the grass for Abyssinian ground hornbill big, black, with a red throat. We look for secretary bird walking through grass on stilt legs. Lilac-breasted roller, blue-headed bee-eater, black-billed barbet, white-crested turaco flash through trees.
You’ll also see Rothschild’s giraffes, Uganda kob, hartebeest, warthogs, and if lucky, lions. Return to south bank by sunset. Dinner on the Nile as fish eagles call. Murchison records 450+ bird species. In 2 days you can tick 150-200 if you’re focused.
Day 3: Morning Birding → Transfer Back to Kampala/Entebbe
Early morning walk or drive around the lodge before checkout. Riverbanks at dawn are full of activity. Giant kingfisher, African darter, yellow-billed stork, saddle-billed stork fish the shallows. Red-throated bee-eaters nest in riverbanks.
After breakfast we drive 6-7 hours back to Kampala/Entebbe. You arrive 3 hours before your flight. Stop in Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on the way if you want to add white rhino tracking — 1.5 hours on foot with rangers. Drop off at Entebbe Airport or Kampala hotel. Three days, Shoebill stork, Murchison Falls, and a long Uganda bird list.
