Kigali City Guide: Things to Do in Rwanda's Capital

Clean, safe and green on its hills. Most visitors start with the Genocide Memorial, then find a city of markets, galleries, coffee and food.

Kigali spreads across a series of ridges and valleys in the centre of Rwanda. It is the arrival point for almost every Rwanda safari, and increasingly for Uganda gorilla trips into southern Bwindi. The city is known for its safety, its order (plastic bags have been banned since 2008) and its monthly Umuganda community work day. A half-day or full day here adds essential context to a gorilla trip.

The Kigali Genocide Memorial

At Gisozi, the memorial is the resting place of more than 250,000 victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. Its exhibitions explain how the genocide was planned and carried out, and how the country has rebuilt since. The children's room is especially hard to see. Allow at least 2 hours, and many visitors take more. Entry is free, and donations support the memorial's work. It is the single most important visit in the city.

Other things to do

  • Kimironko Market: Kigali's biggest market, for fabric (kitenge), produce, baskets and tailors who can make clothes within a day or two.
  • A Nyamirambo walking tour: the city's oldest and most multicultural quarter, with a guided walk run by a women's cooperative, local food and a mosque visit.
  • Inema Arts Center and other galleries showing contemporary Rwandan painting and sculpture.
  • Kandt House Museum: natural history and the colonial founding of Kigali.
  • The Campaign Against Genocide Museum in the Parliament building, telling the military history of 1990–94.
  • Coffee shops serving Rwandan speciality beans, some linked to roasters and farms around Lake Kivu.
  • Craft cooperatives selling imigongo art (geometric cow-dung paintings from eastern Rwanda) and agaseke baskets.

Practical notes

  • Kigali International Airport is 10 km from the city centre, about 20–30 minutes by road.
  • On the last Saturday of the month, Umuganda community work runs from about 8:00 to 11:00 am. Traffic is restricted, so we plan transfers around it.
  • Motorbike taxis are everywhere and helmets are compulsory.
  • Card payments are widely accepted, and mobile money is universal.

From Kigali to the parks

Volcanoes National Park is 2½ hours away, Akagera 2½ hours, Nyungwe 5–6 hours, Lake Kivu 3 hours and Bwindi's Rushaga sector in Uganda 3–4 hours. See Rwanda tours and Kigali to Uganda gorilla packages.

Museums and memorials beyond the city centre

  • Nyamata and Ntarama genocide memorials: about an hour south of Kigali, former churches where thousands were killed, now preserved as memorials. Nyamata is part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing of Rwanda's genocide memorial sites (2023).
  • The King's Palace Museum, Nyanza: a reconstructed royal palace with traditional long-horned Inyambo cattle, about 2 hours south.
  • The Ethnographic Museum, Huye: one of Africa's best ethnographic collections, on the road to Nyungwe.
  • The Presidential Palace Museum: the former presidential home near the airport, with the wreckage of the plane shot down in April 1994.

Food and nightlife

Kigali's restaurants range from Rwandan buffets serving brochettes, isombe, plantains and beans to international cuisine, rooftop bars with city views and speciality coffee shops. Kimironko and Nyamirambo have lively local eateries. Sunday brunch and evenings at hotel rooftops are popular. Try Akabanga chilli oil, local beers, and ginger or passion fruit juices.

Shopping

  • Kimironko Market: fabrics, produce, baskets and a tailoring section.
  • Caplaki crafts village: woodcarvings, baskets, jewellery and textiles.
  • Women's cooperatives: agaseke baskets and imigongo art. Proceeds support women's livelihoods.
  • Design stores: contemporary Rwandan fashion and homeware from young designers.

A brief history of Kigali

Kigali was a small settlement when the German colonial resident Richard Kandt founded an administrative post here in 1907. It became the capital at independence in 1962, when its population was only a few thousand. In 1994, the city was one of the centres of the Genocide against the Tutsi, in which more than a million people were killed across Rwanda in about 100 days. Since then, Kigali has been rebuilt as a modern, carefully planned city, with a strong emphasis on cleanliness, safety, green spaces and technology. Its conference centre and business districts host major international events.

Umuganda

On the last Saturday of each month, Rwandans take part in Umuganda, community work such as cleaning streets, planting trees or building homes for vulnerable families, usually from 8:00 to 11:00 am. Traffic is restricted, and shops open later. Visitors are welcome to join a local Umuganda with a guide, which is an interesting insight into Rwandan civic life. We plan transfers around it.

Getting around Kigali

Your driver-guide handles transfers and tours. For independent exploring, motorbike taxis (motos) are cheap and everywhere, and passengers must wear the helmet provided. Car taxis and ride-hailing apps are available, and buses run on main routes. Kigali's hills make walking scenic but hard work.

Tips for visiting

  • Dress respectfully for the Genocide Memorial, and allow time to reflect.
  • Carry a reusable bag. Plastic bags are banned.
  • Card payments and mobile money are widely used, but carry some cash for markets.
  • Ask before photographing people.
  • Plan around Umuganda on the last Saturday of the month.

How Kigali fits your trip

Most Rwanda trips start and end in Kigali, and a half-day city tour fits easily before driving to Volcanoes or Akagera. Kigali is also a convenient gateway to Uganda's southern Bwindi sectors, 3–4 hours away. See Rwanda tours, Uganda and Rwanda safaris and day tours.

Day trips from Kigali

  • Akagera National Park: a long day with game drives and a boat trip. See Akagera.
  • Volcanoes gorilla trek: possible as a very long day, but better with a night nearby. See Rwanda gorilla trekking.
  • Nyanza and Huye: the King's Palace Museum and the Ethnographic Museum.
  • Nyamata and Ntarama memorials: about an hour south of the city.
  • Lake Muhazi: a peaceful lake about an hour east, for boating and lunch by the water.

Best time to visit Kigali

Kigali's climate is mild all year. June to August is the driest and most popular period, and December to February is also dry. The rains (March–May and October–November) bring afternoon showers, but the city stays easy to explore. Major events, including conferences and cultural festivals, can fill hotels, so book early when travelling during big events.

Kigali Convention Centre and modern Kigali

Kigali's skyline is dominated by the domed Kigali Convention Centre, which lights up in changing colours at night. Around it, business districts, tech hubs and new residential areas reflect Rwanda's ambition to be a regional centre for business and innovation. The city's car-free zone in the centre, public Wi-Fi and cashless payments make it one of Africa's most modern capitals.
