Gorillas at dawn, sundowners on the Nile, private island lodges on Lake Bunyonyi and Kivu: romantic safaris built around the two of you.
A gorilla honeymoon is the kind of story couples tell for decades: an hour in the forest together with a silverback and his family, then a fireplace, a view over volcanoes or a lake, and nobody else around. Uganda and Rwanda do this very well, with smaller lodges, private vehicles and routes that can be as active or as slow as you want.
| Length | Route |
|---|---|
| 5 days | Kigali – Volcanoes (gorillas) – Lake Kivu – Kigali |
| 7 days | Entebbe – fly to Bwindi (gorillas) – Lake Bunyonyi – fly back, with an optional Mabamba shoebill morning |
| 10 days | Kibale (chimps) – Queen Elizabeth (Kazinga cruise) – Bwindi (gorillas) – Lake Bunyonyi – Kigali |
| 12+ days | Gorillas in Uganda, Nyungwe chimps and canopy walk, and Lake Kivu. See luxury gorilla and Nyungwe honeymoon. |
Honeymoon trips range from comfortable mid-range lodges to some of Africa's most exclusive villas. Many couples spend on one or two special nights, usually around the gorilla trek or on the lake, and keep the rest mid-range. Lodge choice changes the total far more than the route does. See luxury safaris.
For a honeymoon, choose smaller lodges with private cottages spaced apart, great views, a fireplace or bath, and staff who arrange special touches. In Bwindi and Volcanoes, forest-edge lodges with outdoor baths and fireplaces are ideal after a cold trek. On the lakes, island and lakeside cottages give privacy and sunsets. In the savannah parks, tented camps with open-air showers and decks over the plains or river are memorable. We choose lodges with honeymoons in mind and let them know you're celebrating.
Our 10-day luxury gorilla and Nyungwe honeymoon and gorilla and Nyungwe safari for honeymooners are good examples.
Many couples finish with a few days on the beach. Zanzibar is a short flight from Entebbe or Kigali, with white sand, turquoise water and historic Stone Town. The Seychelles and Mauritius are reachable via Nairobi or Dubai. Lake Kivu and Lake Bunyonyi offer lake beaches without an extra flight.
The dry seasons (June–September and December–February) are the most popular. The green seasons (March–May and October–November) are quieter, cheaper, and wonderfully romantic, with lush landscapes and dramatic skies. Uganda's low-season gorilla permit (US$600 in April, May and November) makes these months especially good value. See best time to visit.

A honeymoon safari can suit any budget. A mid-range 7-day trip with gorillas typically costs about US$250–450 per person per day plus permits. A luxury trip with fly-in segments and top lodges can reach US$500–1,000+ per person per day. To make the budget go further, choose one or two special lodges for the most memorable nights, travel in the green season, and trek gorillas in Uganda. Some lodges offer honeymoon discounts or special extras, so let us know your wedding date. See luxury safaris and budget safaris.
A gorilla honeymoon combines adventure, emotion and conservation. The trek is a shared challenge, and the hour with a gorilla family, watching mothers and babies and a watchful silverback, is deeply moving and something most couples talk about for years. Your permits also help protect an endangered species and support local communities, which gives the experience added meaning. See Rwanda gorilla honeymoon and great ape honeymoon.
Couples tell us that the moments they remember most are rarely the most expensive ones. Holding hands while a baby gorilla tumbles in front of them. A sunset boat ride with hippos grunting all around. A night by the fire listening to the forest. A canoe on a misty lake at dawn. We plan space in your itinerary for these unhurried moments, not just a list of activities.
Tell us what would make your trip special, and we'll arrange it with the lodges: champagne on arrival, flower-decorated rooms, a private candlelit dinner on a deck overlooking the forest or lake, couples' massages, a photographer for a morning, or a bush breakfast on the savannah. Many lodges add small surprises of their own when they know you're on honeymoon.
Rwanda is compact, with polished lodges and Lake Kivu. Uganda offers more variety (chimps, big game, the Nile) and lower gorilla permit costs. Many couples combine both.
