This 6-day primates and wildlife safari in Uganda combines chimpanzee trekking in Kibale, game drives and a boat cruise in Queen Elizabeth, gorilla trekking in Bwindi and a rest at Lake Bunyonyi.
ThIs 6 Day Primates & Wildlife Safaris is enough for Uganda to change you. You land and 48 hours later you’re standing with chimps in Kibale forest. Two days after that you’re locking eyes with a mountain gorilla in Bwindi. Between them you get lions, elephants, hippos by the hundred, and tree-climbing lions in Ishasha. Then Lake Bunyonyi slows everything down before you fly home.
Detailed Itinerary
Upon Your arrival your guide will meet you at the Entebbe Airport and give you a worm welcome to Uganda. Kampala traffic is real, so we skip the city and take the express highway to Kibale forest National park . The air cools as you climb. You arrive at a forest lodge on the edge of Kibale as evening mist drops into the valley. Check in, dinner, early sleep. Your ranger briefing for tomorrow is 7am sharp. Fuga books lodges 10-15 minutes from the Kibale visitor center so you’re not driving in the dark before trekking.
Have an early breakfast and join others for a chimpanzee briefing at the park headquarters in Kamywanchu at 7am. Rangers assign you to a chimp community and explain the rules: no flash, 7 meters distance, 1 hour with them once found. Then you qalk in the forest. Kibale is dense and loud. Within 30 minutes you’ll hear them before you see them — branches breaking, soft grunts, movement overhead. Then a female drops low to feed on fruit. A young male swings toward you on a vine and stops to study you. A mother grooms her baby while the alpha male screams and drags branches through the forest to mark territory. One hour disappears fast. Back at the lodge to clean up, then we hit the road south to Queen Elizabeth National Park. About 2 hours drive. You’ll arrive at a lodge on the Kasenyi plains as the light turns gold. If you have energy, Fuga can take you out for a short evening game drive. Lions start moving at dusk. Elephants walk to water. Uganda kob antelope graze while the sky goes orange. Forest in the morning, savannah at sunset. Same country, two worlds. Fuga times the transfer so you trek without rushing, then still catch golden hour in Queen Elizabeth.
Have an early morning Tea, then out to Kasenyi plains. This is lion country and Fuga guides know the tracks. We follow fresh prints, listen for hyenas, scan fig trees. You’ll see lions, elephants, buffalo, warthogs, and Uganda kob. Leopards sleep in trees here if we’re lucky. Back for late breakfast, then the afternoon is for water. The Kazinga Channel is a 32km natural channel connecting Lake George to Lake Edward. Uganda Wildlife Authority runs boat cruises that drift past one of Africa’s biggest hippo populations. They crowd the water, mouths open, eyes just above the surface. Crocodiles line the banks. Elephants and buffalo come to drink while fish eagles dive. You sit on the boat deck for 2 hours with camera in one hand, cold drink in the other. It’s slow, quiet, and close. Ten meters from wild animals without a fence. Return to lodge as the channel turns pink. Dinner with the sound of hippos grunting from the water and overnight.
After breakfast we drive south through Queen Elizabeth’s Ishasha sector. The whole reason for this detour: tree-climbing lions. Ishasha lions escape tsetse flies by sleeping in big fig trees during the day. You drive slowly under branches scanning for shapes. When you spot a lion draped over a limb, tail hanging down, it looks like someone put it there for photos. Then it blinks. From Ishasha we continue to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. The road climbs and the temperature drops. Terraced hillsides, farmers working by hand, then the forest closes in — dark, mossy, ancient. You feel Bwindi before you see gorillas. Check into a lodge on the forest edge, 10 minutes from tomorrow’s trailhead. Dinner and briefing. Gorilla trekking starts early and Bwindi is steep, so Fuga books you close. Sleep early. Tomorrow is the main reason you came to Uganda.
Wake Up at 6am. Light breakfast, then briefing at the Bwindi visitor center. Rangers assign you a gorilla family based on fitness and group size. Then you walk into the forest.Bwindi is steep. You’ll climb, hold onto roots, duck under vines. Rangers cut trail with machetes. Then someone stops and whispers. Through the leaves: movement. A massive silverback sits chewing bamboo. Babies roll on the forest floor. A female looks at you, then goes back to feeding like you’re not there. One hour. No barriers, no glass. Just you and a gorilla family 7 meters apart. A baby might crawl toward you and sit there studying your boots. The ranger will tell you stories about that silverback — how old he is, which females he protects, what happened to his brother. After your hour we hike out, legs tired, mind full. Lunch, then drive 1.5 hours to Lake Bunyonyi. You arrive at a lodge on the water with cottages facing 29 islands scattered across the lake. Cool air, quiet water, no hippos or crocs. Dinner on the veranda. You’ve seen chimps and gorillas in 5 days. Tonight you just breathe.
Wake up with pressure and have breakfast with lake views. so after gorillas you’re not rushing straight to the airport. You can paddle a canoe, walk through village gardens, or just sit. Mid-morning we start the 7-8 hour drive back to Entebbe. The road is good tarmac most of the way. you arrive at Entebbe Airport 3 hours before your flight. Stop for lunch in Mbarara, stop at the Equator line in Kayabwe for photos if you want. Drop off at the airport with a head full of forest sounds, gorilla eyes, and hippo grunts. Six days, three primate experiences, big five wildlife, and one lake to slow down at the end.
