Rwanda National Parks and Destinations

Four national parks, a great lake and a capital city worth a day. Rwanda's whole safari circuit fits into a week.

Rwanda protects about 10% of its land in four national parks, and the Rwanda Development Board, working with African Parks in Akagera and Nyungwe, runs them to a consistently high standard. Distances are short, and most of the country is within five hours of Kigali.

Volcanoes National Park

Mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, the Dian Fossey tomb, and Bisoke and Karisimbi hikes. 2½ hrs from Kigali.

Nyungwe National Park

Chimpanzees, 13 primate species and the canopy walkway. 5 hrs from Kigali.

Akagera National Park

Big Five savannah, a Lake Ihema boat trip and night drives. 2½ hrs from Kigali.

Gishwati-Mukura National Park

Rwanda's newest park (2015): a restored forest with a small chimp group and good birding. It combines with Lake Kivu.

Lake Kivu

Rubavu, Karongi and Rusizi: boat trips, islands, coffee and the Congo Nile Trail.

Kigali

The Genocide Memorial, markets, art galleries and one of Africa's cleanest capitals.

How to combine them

A classic 7-day loop runs Kigali – Akagera – Kigali – Volcanoes – Lake Kivu – Nyungwe – Kigali. With less time, Volcanoes alone takes 2–3 days. Adding southern Bwindi in Uganda takes just half a day's drive from Volcanoes. See Uganda and Rwanda safaris.

Volcanoes National Park

Rwanda's oldest park, created in 1925 as part of Albert National Park, the first national park in Africa. It covers about 160 km² of the Virunga volcanoes, and it is where you trek mountain gorillas (US$1,500 permit), track golden monkeys (US$100), hike to Dian Fossey's grave and climb Bisoke or Karisimbi. Lodges range from Musanze town hotels to exclusive volcano-view villas. It is 2½ hours from Kigali. Full guide: Volcanoes National Park.

Nyungwe National Park

About 1,019 km² of ancient montane rainforest in the south-west, co-managed by RDB and African Parks since 2020. Highlights are chimpanzee trekking, the canopy walkway, colobus troops of hundreds, the Isumo waterfall trail and about 310 bird species, including 27 Albertine Rift endemics. It is 5–6 hours from Kigali, or 1 hour from Kamembe airport. Full guide: Nyungwe National Park.

Akagera National Park

About 1,122 km² of savannah, wetlands and lakes on the Tanzanian border, managed with African Parks since 2010. Lions were reintroduced in 2015 and rhinos in 2017 and 2021, making it a Big Five park. Highlights are game drives, a boat trip on Lake Ihema, night drives, and a behind-the-scenes conservation tour. It is 2½ hours from Kigali. Full guide: Akagera National Park.

Gishwati-Mukura National Park

Rwanda's newest national park, declared in 2015, joins two forest fragments between Volcanoes and Nyungwe. Gishwati was heavily cleared in the 1990s and 2000s and is now being restored. It holds a small chimpanzee community, golden monkeys, L'Hoest's monkeys and more than 200 bird species. It has few visitors and pairs well with Lake Kivu. Activities include guided primate walks, birding and community-run tourism.

Lake Kivu and Kigali

Lake Kivu provides beaches, islands, coffee and the Congo Nile Trail, and it is the natural link between Volcanoes and Nyungwe. Kigali is the starting point, with the Genocide Memorial, markets, museums and a lively food and café scene.

Conservation in Rwanda

Rwanda has turned conservation into a national priority. Mountain gorilla numbers in the Virunga have risen through decades of protection, veterinary care and community programmes. Akagera, once badly depleted, now has lions and rhinos again, and Nyungwe's forest is being protected under long-term management. Rwanda shares 10% of park revenue with surrounding communities, funding schools, clinics and water supplies. The annual Kwita Izina ceremony, when newborn gorillas are named, celebrates this link between people and wildlife.

Park fees

RDB and the park management charge permit and entry fees for each activity. The main ones are the US$1,500 gorilla permit and US$100 for golden monkeys. Nyungwe and Akagera charge their own activity and entry fees. On our tours, fees for listed activities are included, and we confirm current rates with every quote.

Best time to visit Rwanda's parks

June to September and December to February are the driest months, and the best for trekking and game viewing. March to May is the wettest period, and October to November has shorter rains. Primates can be tracked all year, and birding is best from November to April. See best time to visit.

Wildlife highlights of Rwanda

Rwanda's small size hides remarkable diversity. Primates include mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, chimpanzees, Rwenzori colobus, L'Hoest's monkeys, grey-cheeked mangabeys and several bushbaby species. Akagera adds the Big Five, plus Masai giraffes, zebras, topi, impala, eland and roan antelope. Around 700 bird species have been recorded nationally, including the shoebill, the great blue turaco and dozens of Albertine Rift endemics. See bird watching in Rwanda.

Where to stay near each park

  • Volcanoes: Musanze town (good value) or lodges near Kinigi on the volcano slopes (mid-range to ultra-luxury).
  • Nyungwe: the Gisakura tea-estate area on the western edge, or near Uwinka in the centre.
  • Akagera: a lake-shore lodge in the south, a hilltop lodge near the entrance, and luxury camps in the north.
  • Lake Kivu: beach hotels in Rubavu, and lakeside lodges in Karongi and Rusizi.
  • Kigali: international hotels, boutique guesthouses and apartments.

Getting between the parks

Rwanda's roads are paved and well maintained. Typical drive times from Kigali are 2½ hours to Volcanoes, 2½ hours to Akagera, 5–6 hours to Nyungwe and 3 hours to Rubavu on Lake Kivu. Between parks, the route via Lake Kivu links Volcanoes and Nyungwe in a scenic 6–7 hour drive, best split with a night on the lake. Domestic flights go from Kigali to Kamembe for Nyungwe, and helicopter charters serve Volcanoes and Akagera.

Rwanda's parks for different travellers

  • Short stays: Volcanoes alone in 2–3 days.
  • Primate lovers: Volcanoes and Nyungwe, with golden monkeys, gorillas, chimps and colobus.
  • First safari: Akagera and Volcanoes, for the Big Five and gorillas in four days.
  • Honeymooners: Volcanoes, then Lake Kivu. See honeymoon safaris.
  • Hikers: Bisoke, Karisimbi and the Congo Nile Trail. See hiking safaris.

Rwanda vs Uganda: parks compared

Rwanda's parks are fewer and closer together, with excellent roads and polished tourism infrastructure. It suits short trips and travellers who want everything within a few hours of Kigali. Uganda has more parks, more wildlife variety (tree-climbing lions, the Nile at Murchison, Kidepo's wilderness) and cheaper gorilla permits, but longer distances. Many travellers combine them: gorillas in one, golden monkeys and lakes in the other. See Uganda national parks and Uganda and Rwanda safaris.

Tips for visiting Rwanda's parks

  • Book gorilla permits months ahead for the dry seasons, and golden monkey permits with them.
  • Plan around Umuganda on the last Saturday of each month, when roads are quiet until about 11:00 am.
  • Pack warm layers for Volcanoes and Nyungwe, where mornings are cold at altitude.
  • Carry reusable bags. Single-use plastic bags are banned.
  • Allow two nights in Nyungwe and Akagera, so you are not rushing long drives.
