3-Day Masai Mara Safari from Nairobi
This 3-day Masai Mara safari from Nairobi gives you two nights in Kenya's best-known reserve, with a full day of game drives…
Amboseli National Park is where you see big elephant herds walking across open plains with Mount Kilimanjaro rising behind them.
Amboseli National Park covers about 390 km² in southern Kenya, close to the border with Tanzania. The park is small and mostly flat: dry lake beds, open grassland and acacia country, broken by green swamps fed by water that runs underground from Kilimanjaro. Those swamps hold animals in the park all year, and they are the reason Amboseli is one of the most reliable places in Africa to watch elephants.
| Location | Kajiado County, southern Kenya, below Kilimanjaro |
| Size | About 390 km² |
| Managed by | Kenya Wildlife Service |
| Known for | Elephants, Kilimanjaro views, swamp birdlife |
| From Nairobi | About 4–5 hours by road, or a short flight |
Amboseli's elephants have been studied for decades, and the park is famous for its big family groups and old bulls with long tusks. Because the land is open, you can watch whole families feeding, bathing in the swamps and crossing the plains, often in the same view as the mountain.
Buffaloes, hippos, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and gazelles are common, and the swamps are good for water birds, pelicans and herons. Lions, cheetahs and hyenas live in the park, though the big-cat viewing is not as rich as in the Masai Mara.
Kilimanjaro is in Tanzania, but Amboseli gives the classic view of it from the north. The mountain is often covered by cloud during the day, so the clearest views are usually early in the morning and in the late afternoon. Plan your game drives around those hours and you will usually get at least one clear sighting during a two-night stay.
| Activity | Why it's worth it |
|---|---|
| Game drives | Elephants around the swamps, with the mountain behind them at the start and end of the day. |
| Observation Hill | A short walk up a small hill for a view over the swamps, the plains and, on a clear day, Kilimanjaro. |
| Maasai village visit | The Maasai live around the park, and a village visit can be added to a game drive. |
Amboseli is about 4–5 hours by road from Nairobi. There is also an airstrip in the park with flights from Nairobi's Wilson Airport. Amboseli sits away from the Masai Mara, so the drive between the two is long and usually goes back through the Nairobi area. Many itineraries add Lake Nakuru in between or fly one leg.
There are lodges inside the park near the swamps and tented camps in the conservancies around it, some with private views of Kilimanjaro. See the Amboseli section of our Kenya safari lodges guide.
Two nights is ideal. It gives you two mornings and two afternoons, which makes a clear view of Kilimanjaro much more likely.
The dry months, from late June to October and from January to February, are best: animals gather near the swamps and the tracks are good. The long rains, usually April and May, can turn the dry lake beds to mud. Kilimanjaro's views are often clearest just after rain.
Day 1. Drive from Nairobi or arrive from Lake Nakuru, with lunch at the lodge. Late-afternoon game drive to the swamps, when elephants come in to drink and the mountain often clears.
Day 2. Early game drive for the best Kilimanjaro light, back for breakfast, then a midday rest. In the afternoon, walk up Observation Hill and drive the edges of the swamps for hippos, buffaloes and birds.
Day 3. A final morning drive before leaving for Nairobi, or the airstrip.

Amboseli works well after the Masai Mara because it is so different: smaller, flatter and built around elephants rather than cats. Our Kenya safari tours include it on the week-long circuit with the Mara and Lake Nakuru.
