Planning guide

Rwanda is small, safe, well organised and has excellent roads, so its highlights fit into short trips. From Kigali it is about 2½ hours to Volcanoes National Park, 2½ hours to Akagera, around 5 hours to Nyungwe Forest and 3 hours to Lake Kivu. That makes Rwanda ideal for a gorilla trek added to a business trip, a week's primate and wildlife safari, or the first leg of a combined trip with Uganda.

Practical notes

Rwanda's gorilla permit is US$1,500. Many nationalities get a visa on arrival or an e-visa; see Rwanda visa options. Plastic bags are banned at entry. On the last Saturday morning of each month, Umuganda community work pauses most traffic until about midday, so we plan transfers around it.

A classic 7-day Rwanda itinerary

  2. Day 2: drive to Akagera, with an afternoon boat trip on Lake Ihema.
  3. Day 3: a morning game drive in the northern plains, then drive to Musanze.
  4. Day 4: gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park.
  5. Day 5: golden monkeys in the morning, then drive to Lake Kivu (Rubavu).
  6. Day 6: along the lake to Nyungwe, with the canopy walk in the afternoon.

This mirrors our 7-day Rwanda gorilla holiday and 7-day Rwanda adventure.

Short Rwanda trips

Rwanda is ideal for 2–4 day add-ons to business trips, conferences or longer African journeys. A gorilla trek needs just two days from Kigali. Akagera can be a long day trip or a comfortable overnight. A Kigali city tour fits into a half-day. See 2-day gorilla trekking, 3-day Big Five and day tours.

What a Rwanda safari costs

Rwanda positions itself as a high-value destination, so the gorilla permit alone is US$1,500. Lodges range from comfortable mid-range hotels in Musanze and Rubavu to some of Africa's most exclusive lodges near Volcanoes and in Nyungwe. Golden monkey tracking is US$100, and Akagera charges its own park and activity fees. Short distances keep transport costs low. If budget is a priority, many travellers combine Rwanda's scenery with a Uganda gorilla trek. See gorilla permits and combined safaris.

Beyond the parks

  • Culture: Iby'Iwacu cultural village, the King's Palace Museum at Nyanza, and the Ethnographic Museum in Huye.
  • Coffee and tea: washing-station visits around Lake Kivu, and the Gisakura tea estate beside Nyungwe.
  • Hiking: Mount Bisoke's crater lake, the Karisimbi overnight climb and the Congo Nile Trail. See hiking safaris.
  • Birding: Nyungwe's Albertine endemics and Akagera's papyrus species. See birding in Rwanda.
  • Honeymoons: volcano lodges and Lake Kivu. See honeymoon safari in Rwanda.

Why Rwanda works so well for visitors

Rwanda's roads are among the best in the region, it is widely considered one of Africa's safest countries, and its tourism has been developed with conservation at the centre. Akagera and Nyungwe are co-managed with African Parks, and 10% of park revenue goes to surrounding communities. See why Rwanda is a top destination and is Rwanda worth it for gorilla trekking?

Best time to visit Rwanda

June to September and December to February are driest and best for gorilla trekking and game drives. March to May is the wettest period, and October to November brings shorter rains. Gorillas and chimps can be tracked all year. See best time to visit.

  1. Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. See Rwanda gorilla trekking.
  2. Golden monkey tracking in the bamboo zone. See golden monkey trekking.
  3. The Dian Fossey tomb hike to the Karisoke research site.

  7. Lake Kivu: islands, beaches and coffee.

Travelling around Rwanda

Rwanda's roads are paved to almost every tourist site, and driving is safe and orderly. The main safari routes are Kigali–Musanze (2 hours), Musanze–Rubavu (1 hour), Rubavu–Karongi (2 hours), Karongi–Nyungwe (2½ hours), Nyungwe–Kigali (5–6 hours) and Kigali–Akagera (2½ hours). The domestic airline flies Kigali–Kamembe for Nyungwe, and helicopter charters can reach Volcanoes and Akagera. The last Saturday of each month is Umuganda, when roads close for community work from about 8:00 to 11:00 am.

Rwanda for different travellers

  • Short on time: 2–3 days of gorillas from Kigali.
  • Primate enthusiasts: gorillas, golden monkeys, chimps and colobus in 6–7 days.
  • Luxury travellers: villa lodges near Volcanoes and in Nyungwe. See luxury safaris.
  • Hikers: Bisoke, Karisimbi and the Congo Nile Trail. See hiking safaris.
  • Families: Akagera, Lake Kivu and cultural visits, with gorillas for over-15s. See family safaris.

Getting to Rwanda

Kigali International Airport has direct flights on RwandAir and international carriers to Dubai, Doha, Istanbul, Brussels, Amsterdam, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Entebbe, Johannesburg and other hubs. The airport is compact and efficient, and many nationalities get a visa on arrival or an e-visa. From arrivals, it is 20–30 minutes to central Kigali and 2½ hours to the gorilla lodges near Volcanoes National Park.

Food and drink in Rwanda

Rwandan cooking is simple and fresh: brochettes (grilled goat or beef skewers), isombe (cassava leaves), plantains, beans, and tilapia and sambaza (small fish) from Lake Kivu. Rwanda's coffee and tea are exported worldwide, and cafés in Kigali serve single-origin beans from the hills around Lake Kivu and Huye. Akabanga, a fiery chilli oil in a tiny yellow bottle, is on most tables. Lodges cater for all dietary requirements with advance notice.

Responsible travel in Rwanda

Rwanda's tourism model was built around conservation from the start. Revenue sharing funds schools, clinics and water projects around the parks, and former poachers work as trackers, porters and guides. Visitors can support this directly by hiring porters, visiting community projects and buying crafts from cooperatives. The plastic bag ban and monthly Umuganda community work show how seriously the country takes its environment.

Where to stay in Rwanda

Rwanda's accommodation is excellent at every level. Near Volcanoes, choose between Musanze town hotels (good value, 25 minutes from the park) and lodges on the volcano slopes, some among Africa's most exclusive. On Lake Kivu, Rubavu has beachfront hotels and Karongi has quiet lodges over the water. In Nyungwe, there are forest-edge hotels near Gisakura and a luxury lodge on a tea estate. Akagera has a tented lake-shore lodge, a hilltop lodge and luxury camps in the north. We match lodges to your budget in every quotation.
